Known as the "Kilted Poet," Bear Step began writing at an early age and published his first magazine at the age of 12. Throughout his teenage years, he edited various magazines and was a freelance journalist for many music and art-related publications. Bear Step is a veteran of the early 80s Chicago Hardcore Punk Rock scene and played guitar in Negative Element and many other Punk Rock bands.

In his early twenties, he became deeply inspired by the tropical imagery of Pablo Neruda and the surrealistic madness of Salvador Dali. He published his first book, Silence Broken and other Poems in 1988. Step moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1990 and became an integral part of the Café Diem Poets for over five years.
