It was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, both the Walt Disney movie and the Jules Verne novel, that sparked an early interest in science fiction for Gary Bourgeois. That interest soon expanded to include the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Edgar Rice Burroughs. In high school friends introduced him to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft, and Robert E. Howard. While getting his bachelor’s degree in English Education from the University of New Orleans, Gary snuck as many science fiction and fantasy titles into his curriculum as he could get away with. By the early ‘90s he was reading more contemporary authors, such as, Tim Powers, James Blaylock, and William Gibson.
