J. Caleb Cunningham is a trial attorney and the author of The State Rests: Crime and Punishment at Lake of the Ozarks.

A native of south Alabama, he earned his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Alabama before founding a small firm in Mobile. In 2017, looking for a fresh start, he took a job as a prosecutor in Camden County, Missouri, home to the Lake of the Ozarks. He was there for five years, rising to elected Prosecuting Attorney. Along the way he secured multiple life sentences, was a founding member of treatment courts for addiction, and collected more stories than any one office should reasonably produce.
