Violet Snow grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York. After majoring in Russian at Darmouth College, she taught English in Tehran and spent a year and a half in India and Sri Lanka, trying to be a yogi or a Buddhist. Finally she gave away her possessions, shaved her head, and started begging. Her six weeks as a sadhu--a spiritual wanderer--are the subject of her memoir "Afternoon of a Sadhu."

Since then, she has been a computer programmer, a copywriter, an herbalist, an urban communard, an aikido practitioner (3rd degree black belt), and a freelance journalist.
