John G. Roberts, Jr., J.D. (Harvard Law School, 1979; A.B., Harvard College, 1976) is the 17th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America, nominated in 2005 by President George W. Bush to fill the seat of the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, for whom Roberts clerked during the 1980 term, when Rehnquist was still an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

Roberts previously served as a law clerk for Judge Henry J. Friendly of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1979–1980. He was Special Assistant to the Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice from 1981–1982; Associate Counsel to President Ronald Reagan, White House Counsel’s Office from 1982–1986; and Principal Deputy Solicitor
