ESSENCE BONITAZ is a self-described admirer of all things creative, chronic multitasker, and recovering perfectionist. Her work has won Honorable Mention from New Millenium Writing Awards, appeared on Independent Book Review's list of "Best Books We Read This Year," and is strongly supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Her storytelling began as a child with Barbie doll play as she escaped the discomfort of being packed in a tent at family camp-outs, squished in the backseat between her younger brother and two older sisters, or edged into the smaller portion of a shared bedroom.

Death Becomes Me

For six days I’ve existed, here and light years away, in limbo, silently watching over my body—that mess of bones beneath a thin white blanket in the ICU—awaiting God’s sentence. Thanks to my family’s prayers and tireless devotion, He has granted me omniscience while professionals deliberate.

The wait is over.
