Roy Penny was born in Shawnee Oklahoma in 1918. His father and mother, as children, were part of the land rush of the 1890’s when 180-acre farms were made available in Indian Territory, and settlers came in covered wagons to claim them. His father was killed in an accident in April, 1921, when Roy was 3 years old. The family had been planning to move to Colorado at the end of that month, but those plans were cancelled after the death of his father. He grew up with eight brothers and sisters, plowing fields with a team of mules, working in the vegetable garden, raising cattle, and riding his horse “Buck.” As a youngster, he developed a life-long love of reading. His favorite first book was “The Mysterious Rider” by Zane Grey. He graduated fr Roy Penny was born in Shawnee Oklahoma in 1918. He graduated from Bethel High School as the valedictorian of his class, and went on to attend Oklahoma Baptist University for two years.
He fought in the US Army during World War II. He was a Major, and commanded an anti-aircraft battery. His unit landed on the beaches during the American invasions of Leyte (October, 1944) and Okinawa (April, 1945). The war in the South Pacific put things in perspective for him, and whenever anything went wrong after that his comment was “It’s not raining and no one is shooting at us.” After the war he attended UCLA and received a bachelor’s degree in English. He also worked for a time in New York.
In 1954, he met Isabelle Harris in Tripoli, Libya. Isabelle, who was from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was in Libya to visit her uncle, a state department official. At that time, Roy Penny was working for a US government contractor in Tripoli building a Strategic Air Command air base. Isabelle had also grown up riding horses, and the name of her horse had also been “Buck.” They were married in 1954. After their marriage, they spent 3 years travelling and living in Libya, Ethiopia, the Middle East and Europe This was a magical time for them.
They returned to the United States in 1957 to start a family. Roy Penny Jr. was born in 1958 and Chris Penny in 1962. Pursuing his life-long interest in literature, Roy became an English teacher, a career that he followed for 42 years. Most of that time was spent teaching at St. Georges, a private high school located in Newport, Rhode Island. Isabelle was also an English teacher and vice principal. The school where she worked was re-named “Pennfield School” after her upon her retirement. Roy was a trustee of the school. In 1975 he and Isabelle purchased a 38 acre farm in Middletown, Rhode Island, and he spent the next 18 years bringing the farm up to his standards after years of neglect, fencing it, and raising cattle. He and Isabelle sold their farm and moved to Colorado in 1993 to be closer to their children.
In addition to his legacy as a wonderful husband, father and friend, he is most proud of his book “Till We Meet Again,” a story of life in Oklahoma during the period 1890 to 1937.
