Anonymous writer who published several gothic novels towards the end of the 18th century. An educated guess (by Don Shelton) has been made that the man behind the pseudonym was Sir Anthony Carlisle, a famous surgeon of his time.

Most of the novels attributed to Mrs. Carver were originally printed without that pseudonym connected to it. It wasn't until 1814 when Minerva Press, who printed them, released a catalog that connected the pseudonym to the four confirmed novels: 'Elizabeth', 'The Horrors at Oakendale Abbey', 'The Legacy', and 'The Old Woman'.
