Birdsong
The TARDIS arrives on what should be an uninhabited and lifeless planet, only to discover a cottage established by a pair of advance scouts waiting for the main colonisation fleet. The result is one of those stories where it’s obvious that something isn’t quite right, not least because of the occasional birdsong on a planet that has no birds. But there’s more to it than that, with the relationship between the two scouts obviously strained, bringing in themes of coercion and mental exhaustion on a world where there is simply no social support. Liv, in particular, is well used here, her instincts as a med-tech leading her to take one side when things may not be so simple. There are twists and turns as the story develops, and the use of melodic birdsong as something creepy is a great touch. It’s a strong story that would be difficult to tell with a Doctor less empathetic than Eight, bringing a human touch to what’s partly sci-fi horror. One of the best for a while. 5 stars.

Lost Hearts
Continuing the general theme, the historical episode in this collection is a ghost story set at Cambridge University in 1903. In some respects, the setup resembles that of Human Nature, with the exception that the Doctor is aware of his own identity, but that’s where the similarity ends. Strange events are occurring throughout the college, but what could possibly connect them remains obscure for a while as the Doctor investigates. It’s Helen’s turn to get more of a focus, as she finds a personal connection to some of what’s happening, but Liv has several good moments too. The villain is perhaps a little overplayed, and the eventual explanation is rather convoluted, but it does all work and tie together, and, as usual, the atmosphere is strong. 4.5 stars.

Slow Beasts
The TARDIS arrives on a planet in a distant galaxy, where native life is dominated by vast but incredibly slow-moving animals. Compared with the first two episodes in this collection, the story is also rather slow itself, with a lot of world-building and character interaction but not much in the way of action. Eventually, something does go wrong, but the acting and writing are good enough that I didn’t find myself waiting for that moment to arrive. Those who want something faster-paced, with obvious peril from the beginning, may be disappointed, even if they aren’t after traditional action scenes. On the plus side, however, there are some nice ideas in it, a moral quandary at the end, and, given the short length (it’s 52 minutes), a decent sketch of the human colonist society that the Doctor is trying to save. So, if imagery and background are your thing, it will likely be rather better. 4 stars. ...more

The first story is a somewhat surreal offering, with the Doctor arriving at a house from which a young girl has mysteriously gone missing. It starts out as a typical investigatory tale, with the inclusion of a French spirit medium and a Ouija board. However, the messages received via the board lead to a series of bizarre events throughout the house as Harry and Naomi try to follow their lead. The Doctor tries to tackle the entity at source, and suffice it to say, it’s not too long before we find out what it is and what it’s after – the initial missing girl being almost an afterthought in terms of the plot. I can’t help but comment on the bad French accent, which I suspect is partly due to the same actor voicing the (non-French) antagonist, which she does far better, lending a suitable air of menace and successfully implying that a masculine entity is speaking through a woman’s lips. It’s all very strange, but that’s rather the point, and there are some inventive ideas in here that fit with the theme. 4 stars.

The Caged Assassin
The Doctor encounters the famous wombat-fancier Dante Gabriel Rossetti – perhaps better known as a Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet. This leads fairly rapidly to a rather absurd story about murderous wombats and a radioactive tiger. It seems to be intended as a comedy, but unfortunately leans rather heavily on the idea that wombats are inherently funny, without there being much humour beyond this. Which, if you do indeed find the idea of armed wombats with squeaky voices to be amusing, may well be all you need. There is also little room, in a story this short that has to fit in two companions, to explore the real-world historical figures that feature in it – the owner of an exotic animal shop, and one of Rossetti’s muses, in addition to the man himself (who comes out of it rather badly). As so often with comedies, it can depend on the sense of humour of the listener, and I’m afraid this one didn’t work for me. 3 stars.

Metamorphosis
After the unusual tones of the first two stories, this last one is relatively straightforward. The Doctor arrives on a world where people are being mysteriously kidnapped, and has to foil the schemes of the villain behind it all – whose identity is obvious from the cover. Since, like the others, it’s a two-parter, there’s a limit to the depth it can explore, although the solitary cliffhanger is a good one. Both Harry and Naomi get a few things to do, and, while we may never see anything of the alien planet’s culture or society, the story manages to make us sympathetic to their plight. It’s less original than the others, although the villain’s plan isn’t any more complicated than in the previous episode, but it feels more suited to the Fourth Doctor’s TV era, with the right mix of humour and peril. 4 stars. ...more

Missy and the Time Assassin
The first story is a comedy, which sees Missy teamed up with an inept “time assassin” who tries to rid history of tyrants but repeatedly makes things worse by his presence. This being Missy, it’s a black comedy, and there are quite a few deaths along the way. Aside from the assassin’s failings, a lot of the humour comes from how Missy interacts with him, initially admiring him for what he appears to have done, and then trying to nudge him in what is (from her perspective) a more productive direction. (There are also repeated references to him being good-looking – he’s played by Paterson Joseph, but obviously that doesn’t come across on the audio). The story hops from planet to planet, across different periods of history, a disparate collection of scenes tied together by the characterisation of the two leads, but coalesces into a larger plot towards the end. How well it works may depend on your sense of humour, but anybody who’s a fan of Missy’s more humorous moments is probably in the right audience. 4 stars.

Bad Apple Brigade
In the second episode, Missy arrives on Brownsea Island off the coast of Dorset in 1922. The miscreants here are a group of three troubled teenage girls sent on a camping trip by their Reform School. The group soon comes under threat from a mysterious entity living in the woods that cover most of the island. It’s the sort of setup that would be played for horror in a typical Doctor Who story and there are some elements of that. For the most part, though, the presence of Missy and, in particular, how she turns out to relate to the ‘monster’, mean that we get rather more comedy beats. Furthermore, desperate though the situation the girls find themselves in becomes, the fact that Missy isn’t particularly bothered by it takes the edge off some of the tension. It’s a middling story with some nice ideas, and that makes the girls more sympathetic than it might, but that doesn’t quite live up to its full potential. 3.5 stars.

The Baron Robbers
The third story returns to a more purely comedic tone. Here, Missy is stranded in 14th-century England and has to steal a gemstone to repair her vortex manipulator. This leads to her becoming involved with a couple of amateurish thieves, with additional comedy beats from her dealings with the baron who owns the gemstone and a disguised alien. Plus, Edward the Black Prince, while largely in the background, is played as somewhat foppish, which he probably wasn’t in real life. It’s not a heist story in the usual sense, with the plan being basic, more a tale of double-dealing and backstabbing with a healthy dose of Missy’s induced chaos. The humour doesn’t, at least for me, hit quite as well as in the first episode in this collection, but it helps keep this collection distinct from, say, the War Master audios. 3.5 stars. ...more
