Born of middle-class Portuguese parents and educated in England, Mendes fought in Flanders during the First World War and returned to Trinidad in 1920, inspired with socialist ideals by the Russian Revolution. In the 1930s he became a
prominent member of the group associated with The Beacon (1931–35), a radical journal advocating Trinidad’s cultural independence. He wrote some fifty short stories as well as two novels, Pitch Lake
(1934), concerning the rise and fall of an ambitious young Portuguese man in Trinidad society, and Black Fauns (1935), an account of life among the island’s yard folk.
