Lance McCulloch was raised in Durango, Colorado. The McCulloch’s have had ties to the area since late in the 19th Century. To this day, his brother, Kevin runs the farming and ranching operation on the family homestead. This six thousand acre ranch lays approximately fifteen miles south of the town and has provided the backbone for multiple generations as well as an unbreakable tie to South Western Colorado.
After graduating from the University of Colorado in 1989 with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Lance took a job with Fujitsu Microelectronics in Portland, Oregon. This is where he met his wife, Jennifer. He had become friends with Jen’s mother, Becky Thompson through work. She had insisted that Lance should meet her daughter, and, as it Lance McCulloch was raised in Durango, Colorado. The McCulloch’s have had ties to the area since late in the 19th Century. The next seven years were spent in Portland, Petaluma, and Freemont California working in the field of semiconductor manufacturing. In those years, Lance and Jennifer had twin girls, Amanda and Carly and their youngest, Chaney Rose McCulloch.
Thomas McCulloch, Lance’s father, boarded Egypt Air 990 on Halloween night, 1999. This flight was doomed from a time that preceded takeoff, eventually plunging into the Atlantic a short time after leaving New York. There were no survivors. Lance had lost his mother, Jean, ten years prior to the crash and the result left him with only his brother, in Durango. The pulls to return to Colorado had never been stronger.
A fateful call from start-up in Boulder, Colorado arrived in the midst of this turmoil. Lance remembers telling his wife, “I don’t know much about this company, but we are moving to Colorado.” Back in Boulder, life finally felt right, being within driving distance to Durango and settling in to raise their girls, Jennifer and Lance finally felt at home.
Following the events of 9/11, the venture capital funding that supported the company’s start-up dried up as fears ran across the nation and influenced the cautions of the financial community. When the company ceased operation, Lance was the Vice President of Operations.
In 2003, Lance started a company near Boulder that targeted the gear and technology needs of the recently formed FEMA teams across America. His company patented a technology that attracted a public company out of Dallas, Texas, eventually leading to $15 million exclusive distribution contract between the two companies. However, in late 2009, it was apparent that the Public company did not intend to honor its promise set forth in their agreement. Between 2010 and late 2013, the assets of Lance’s company were sold and for all intents and purposes the company ceased operation. This was a dark time for Lance but he also discovered a passion that energized and lifted his spirit; this, of course, was writing The Colors of Blue.
On December 20th, 2013 a Dallas jury found the public company guilty of fraud and awarded just compensation. In late November of that same year, The Colors of Blue was published.
The Colors of Blue is the first work by Lance. His next book is targeted for release in the spring of 2014.
