Dr. J. N. Sarkar obtained his M. A. degree from the Patna University. A member of Bihar Educational Service for 30 years, he was in Jadavpur University for 10 years and then for 3 years as UGC Professor. A Fellow of Asiatic Society and a recipient of Jadunath Sarkar Gold Medal, he was the Professor and Director of the Institute of Islamic Culture and Civilization. The Indian History Congress elected him as a Sectional President in 1955, and its General President in 1976. He read papers in the First Bangladesh Itihas Samity (1971) at Chittagong. He was a contributor (of a chapter entitled 'the Cultural Heritage of the Mughal Age') to a 3-volume 'Comprehensive History of Bangladesh' and also to the Encyclopedia Asiana.
