The oldest daughter of a scroll mounter, Chiyo-ni was an Edo period (1603-1868) poet, commonly thought of as one of the greatest of the hokku (now haiku) poets. She started writing at the age of seven, and even against the ridicule that women often got in the writing profession in that time, she was already well renowned just a decade later.
