I was born in San Francisco to an American mother and Welsh father. I grew up in South Carolina before leaving at 22 to try my hand at graduate school in North Carolina. That hand failed spectacularly and I began a winding road that detoured in Baltimore and has temporarily stopped in Germany.

I’ve long said, “I want to be a writer.” In October 2012, after 29 years of not writing, a friend challenged me to either complete NanoWriMo or cough up $100. I finished November with 50,000 words, the beginning of a novel, and desperately wanted more. Cut to more than 3 years later and I'm just about to publish that novel, Charlotte Gnoll. In the meantime, I began several poetry series and have fallen in love with flash fiction.

While the story didn't work for me (and Cora's infatuation never felt anything but creepy), Ellis plotted well enough that she kept me engaged to the end. The writing didn't feel up to the challenge Ellis set. I couldn't escape the feeling that the a ...more

Exceptional beginning. Charlie is a wonderful, well-thought-out character.

But then we get to Empis and everything feels half-baked. I became so bored and confused I DNF.

I never thought I'd read a Stephen King book and be bored. Yet here we are.

So much navel-gazing. So little payoff. And while payoff can happen in later books (and I'm assured does), I've come to one inescapable conclusion: I dislike King's writing.

Power-skimmed the last third because I just couldn't do it anymore--the writing and characters are lifeless. Though that's a bit unfair; the writing in the first third was light, clear, and fun. After the first plot twist, everything went downhill fr ...more

Quite endearing, but its episodic nature, which made it an initial quick read, ultimately became too boring. Fascinating look into pre-war Swansea.

Captivating, surely, but solely because I find myself at 41 at a similar crossroads of life to the main character at 30. Which singular points to the bullshit artistry of both Paul Kemp and Hunter S. Thompson who wrote the book at age 23 and imagined ...more
