I was born to immigrant parents, grew up in New York City, and attended local public schools. After graduating from the High School of Music and Art I earned my Bachelor’s degree from the City College of New York and a Master’s from New York University. I taught high school Social Studies for a number of years and then changed career paths. I obtained my Masters and Professional Diploma in Guidance and Counseling from Fordham University and became a high school guidance counselor.

Although I did not speak the native language of the students I taught and later counseled, my personal background enabled me to understand the difficulties they faced adjusting to a new environment. But I was never able to answer the question: why does one child me ...more
