I'm an obsessive book lover, a communication scholar studying media, politics and identity, and an ardent TV, film, and art enthusiast. As a reader, my favorite genres are romance, mystery, literary fiction and non-fiction related to media and politics. I like novels that combine great storytelling, humor and social commentary.

All time favorite authors include: Jane Austen, Zadie Smith, and Charles Dickens. New faves: Percival Everett, Alyssa Cole, Talia Hibbert, Sally Rooney and Tana French. My literary first loves were Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, and Nancy Drew.

My research explores the relationship between media, politics, public opinion and public policy. My aim is to understand the role that media and culture play in attitudes and be

All my writing and interviews in one place!

Hi I've been doing a lot of writing and not a lot of blog posting. The good news is I now have a constantly updated portfolio page right on this website that includes brief excerpts and links to ALL of my recent writing and podcasts: portfolio.cvbell.com. The different tabs link to subsections for interviews, writing about books, and on film and tv I hope you'll give it a visit.

“There’s much more to black history than pain and hard times, and romance authors, more than anyone else, know it. A writer friend told me that’s what he thinks some people outside of the culture don’t get about blackness: the sheer joy of it, especially given so many are only fixated on the struggle. Black romance thrives on complexity and nuance, on black solidarity and achievement, on the triumph of everyday life lived well, in spite of the odds.

“Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it.”
Donna Tartt, The Secret History

“I was not a romantic, but when Easton Archer looked at me like that I felt like I could invent a whole new life. Just so I could get to have him without conflicts or guilt, without the world getting in the way of this joy.”
Adriana Herrera, American Love Story

“No one can be independent of other people completely, so why not give up the attempt, she thought, go running in the other direction, depend on people for everything, allow them to depend on you, why not. She knows he loves her, she doesn’t wonder about that anymore.”
Sally Rooney, Normal People

“Le coeur a ses raisons que la raison ne connait point. French. Pascal. The heart has its reasons, whereof reason knows nothing.”
Madeleine L'Engle, A Wrinkle in Time

“The fact that you have the things you have isn’t wrong. Not understanding what you have is.”
Sonali Dev, Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors
