Joe Hoeffel is a veteran advocate for progressive public policies and good government in Pennsylvania and the country.

Joe served for 25 years in elected office as a three-term United States Congressman, four-term Pennsylvania State Representative and three-term Montgomery County Commissioner. Joe believes in robust public action for the public good, and supported socially liberal and fiscally responsible policies. Joe started “Iraq Watch” to advocate through House debate for changes in our military and foreign policies in Iraq. He proposed a modern day Marshall Plan for economic revitalization in the Middle East and Eurasia.

He helped write the county’s first ethics policy for employees and elected officials.

Joe ran Pennsylvania’s office to promote international business for Governor Ed Rendell, expanding Pennsylvania’s exports overseas and encouraging foreign investments to create Pennsylvania jobs. He served as chair and board member of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, promoting smart growth and livable communities.

Joe achieved a number of firsts: the first Democrat to represent Abington in the State House in over 60 years, the first Democrat re-elected to Congress from Montgomery County, and the first Democratic Chair of the Montgomery County Commissioners.

Joe is a recovering politician, lawyer, economic development consultant, and an adjunct professor in the political science department at Temple University in Philadelphia. He is the author of The Iraq Lie: How the White House Sold the War, an insider account of how the Bush White House misled the Congress and the country into the Iraq War under false pretenses.

Joe is a lifelong resident of Abington, Pennsylvania, and was graduated from the William Penn Charter School, Boston University and Temple University School of Law.
