“She”
Mike Lunnon-Wood, Somewhere Out There

“It was on one of these occasions that Seager was bent over the eyepiece that the Shangaan spoke for the first time since they began. He looked up at the moon, a bright solid disc in the night sky and said, “What a thing that is,” with some wonder in his voice. Seager looked up at him and then the sky. “It was barren without life or water or air,” he replied. “How do you know? Even the farlooker can’t show you that,” he said defensively. Seager looked back at him and smiled. “The Americans. They have put two men up there in a special aeroplane. They walked on the surface in special suits like a fireman.”
Chimkuyu looked at him quickly. “Is this true?”
Seager nodded. “How dare they? Is nothing sacred? Do you ask a woman why she will die for her child? Do you ask the earth why rain falls in one place and not another? Do you ask the sun why it rises?”
