Why Mr Handel chose to debut the Messiah in Dublin

George Frideric Handel landed in London in 1711 after living in Italy for three years and familiarising himself with every aspect of the Italian opera. His timing proved to be impeccable. For, while, the aristocratic taste for all things Italian was just taking off, on the music front a few things were missing: Italian singers, orchestral players, and composers of opera.

His luck didn’t stop there.
