Kees Verheul (1940) is slavist en schrijver. Hij vertaalde onder andere werk van Joseph Brodsky en Anna Achmatova. Naar de poëzie van Achmatova deed hij onderzoek in Rusland en over haar werk publiceerde hij The theme of time in the poetry of Anna Axmatova (1971). Hij schreef talloze essays over literatuur, die verzameld werden werden in bundels als Een volmaakt overwoekerde tuin (1987) en De dolende pen (2002). Als romanschrijver debuteerde hij met Kontakt met de vijand (1975). Verheul werkte aan een romancyclus over de Tjoettsjevs waarvan het eerste deel Villa Bermond, in 1992 verscheen en deel twee, Stormsonate in het voorjaar van 2006.
