Cubana de nacimiento, Carilda Oliver Labra nació el 6 de julio del año 1922, en la ciudad de Matanzas. En la Universidad de La Habana obtiene el título Doctora en Derecho Civil. Además de ejercer su profesión como abogada en su ciudad natal, trabajó también en la biblioteca pública Gener y del Monte, de Matanzas, y fue profesora de dibujo, pintura y escultura.

Por su poema Canto a la bandera, obtuvo en 1950 el Primer Premio y Flor Natal en el Concurso Nacional de Poesía. Por su libro Al sur de mi garganta obtiene el Premio Nacional de Poesía del Ministerio de Educación. Además fue la ganadora del Premio Nacional en el Certamen Hispanoamericano que fuera organizado por el Ateneo Americano de Washington en conmemoración al tricentenario del na ...more
