They’re a similar viewpoint to what I’m used to, as we’re both part of the Christian faith, but different enough that they still felt like a peek into a different world. They explored communities that I’m not a part of, but who love Jesus like I do.

Praise Through Pain
My favorite part of this novella was the romance. The sweetness, understanding and respecting of boundaries, and how their shared love for God was bound with their love for each other.
Parts of this novella felt a little rushed. Elijah begins the story outside his church community, and then spends the rest of the novella helping Alexis return to the community. When did he return himself? But, I suppose some things have to be shortened to fit into a novella length.

Rapha
This novella excelled in introducing the reader to Rebecca’s past trauma a little bit at a time, with hints and foreshadowing sprinkled throughout the novella. We understand a little more with each chapter until we finally have the full story of what happened to drive her away from her old church. And her personal journey is reflected by the conflict she sees Paster Josiah go through with a combative parishioner in her new church.
And the message of forgiving a hateful Christian— even when that person will never acknowledge they did anything wrong— hit very hard for me. Especially during these times when a lot of “Christians” are harming people through bigotry. The novella’s characters are loving and find forgiveness even when hurt by unchristian-like behavior, and that’s inspiring.

For the Love of Truth
This novella succeeds in making the main character Candi’s situation truly horrifying. It explores a young woman’s experience being preyed upon by a corrupt pastor, and his abusive, manipulative behavior is portrayed in a realistic way. The story does a fantastic job of making the reader feel uncomfortable with him right away. Paster Richard has put himself in a righteous, unquestionable position and wields such power over Candi and the rest of his church. The reader can understand why she struggles so much to get away from him, even as he breaks her down emotionally and mentally.
I'm not a huge fan of the classic rescue romance, which I felt that Candi's and Justice's romance fell into. But it was nice that the ending emphasized how Candi recaptured her own strength.

All in all, I enjoyed these novellas and how they shared stories of people finding belonging in church communities. ...more
