Stoner, by John Williams. I just finished reading this book that was written 50 years ago and had gone out of print until 2013. The writing is beautifully restrained. Williams is in complete control of his characters, of the tale he is telling. Many friends in Europe suggested this American novel. Oddly, when I was in the US last month, none of the bookshops I visited had it on their shelves. I encourage American friends to buy it.
