Ivan Andreyevich Krylov (Russian: Иван Андреевич Крылов) is Russia's best known fabulist. Fables of Aesop and Jean de la Fontaine loosely based many of his earlier fables; later fables, original work, often satirized the incompetent bureaucracy, stifling social progress in his time.

Ivan Krylov spent his early years in Orenburg and Tver. His father, a distinguished military officer, in 1779 died, leaving the destitute family. A few years later, Krylov and his mother moved to Saint Petersburg in the expectation of securing a government pension. Krylov obtained a position in the civil service but after death of his mother in 1788 gave up this position. His literary career began in 1783, when he sold a comedy he had written to a publisher. He

“When partners can’t agree
Their dealings come to naught
And trouble is their labor’s only fruit.

Once Crawfish, Swan and Pike
Set out to pull a loaded cart,
And all together settled in the traces;
They pulled with all their might, but still the cart refused to budge!
The load it seemed was not too much for them:
Yet Crawfish scrambled backwards,
Swan strained up skywards, Pike pulled toward the sea.
Who’s guilty here and who is right is not for us to say –
But anyway the cart’s still there today.”
Ivan Krylov’s Fable “Swan, Pike & Crawfish”.

“It is only when our consciences become tangled that the truth begins to hurt.”

“We are the Roots of the tree on which you flourish. Go on rejoicing in your beauty! But remember there is this difference between us that with every autumn the old Leaves die, and with every spring new Leaves are born; but if the Roots once perish neither you nor the tree can live at all.”
Ivan Krylov
