New Novella – An announcement in Three Parts

Hey there everybody,

Later this year, I’m publishing a new novella.

In a lot of ways, it’s going to be similar to The Slow Regard of Silent Things. It’s set in Temerant. It’s going to be illustrated by the fabulous Nate Taylor, and it centers on one of the secondary characters from the Kingkiller Chroniclers: Bast.

[You’re never secondary in our hearts, Bast.]

The Novella is called The Narrow Road Between Desires.

I’ve always said when a new project was happening, you’d hear it here first. So...

message 11: by Deryk (new)

Deryk Allan Did you pen all these replies yourself? because i can't believe for a minute that anyone wants to read anything else from you but the third book, you know the one! the one we've been waiting for over a decade to read whilst you've been gaming and conning people out of their money.

message 12: by Julia (new)

Julia I'll be reading this. :) This novella comes at a very appropriate time in my life.

message 16: by Daragh (new)

Daragh Farrell p.s. ignore the impatient haters, such short attention spans.

message 17: by Dale (new)

Dale Thomas Daragh wrote: "p.s. ignore the impatient haters, such short attention spans."
It’s been 15 years since book 1…. And 12 since book 2. I don’t think you can call that “short attention span”.
When it comes to Pat though, there has been that many broken promises over the years I’ll believe it when I see it.

message 18: by Ions (new)

Ions i hope those who are excited know that this novella is just an expanded version of a Bast story they've already read back in 2013

message 19: by Ubernoodle (new)

Ubernoodle You ever gonna deliver that promised chapter for charity or do you plan on continuing to pocket that cool million you bilked from a bunch of gullible fans?

message 20: by Mary (new)

Mary Thank you Pat, it was good to hear your voice streaming again and I am excited for your novella.

message 21: by Susan (new)

Susan An announcement in three parts?!
Three parts
Three
Really?
So, two parts and then we never see announcement three.

message 22: by Dave (new)

Dave It's been so long I've forgotten who Bast is. Maybe time for a re-read...

Stop being so entitled. He doesn't owe you anything.

Enric uoo

Kent Jesse wrote: "Stop being so entitled. He doesn't owe you anything."

From what I understand, he kind of does... seeing as he took charity money to write something and has yet to deliver. And given that the publisher has called him out on failing to deliver the promised book (and likely is contractually obligated to deliver), let alone providing even a draft to them after a decade, I'd say he has demonstrated failure to deliver on promises to fans and business partners alike.

message 27: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Very intriguing and interested to see. Must admit that when I saw "novella" my initial reaction was "sooo . . for Rothfuss that's like 400 pages, right?"

message 28: by Georgia (new)

Georgia I always said I'd wait until the third book came out until I re-read the series and buy and read the novellas. I can't even remember who Bast is at this point..

Is this you again Rothfuss, if it is, yes you do owe me, and thousands of others, you owe us a third book, ya crook.

Hahahahahahaha, you've killed me.

message 31: by Adi (new)

Adi P I think everyone's waiting on the 3rd book, as am I, but in the meantime, I'm looking forward to more background on Bast !

message 32: by Ana (new)

👏👏😁
I love it

message 36: by to'c (new)

to'c I see the arrival of the third book as just an excuse to read the first three over again. (Yeah. Sounds odd but that’s the way it is)

Tho’ I’ve already read Slow Regard several times over. His best work?

Any new work from Mr. Rothfuss is reason enough to celebrate.

Sean Wulf wrote: "He‘s just rothfussing as usual… But once he‘s gone, Brandon Sanderson is going to give us closure."

that's great. I actually started reading Sanderson because I was tired of waiting for Rothfuss and GRRM. Sanderson is a great prolific writer. Not real edgy, but still a good read. Just let one of their ghost writers help them through their writers block and put a nail in this thing. If this novella is anything like The slow regard... I'm gonna give it a straight pass anyway.

message 40: by Ibrahim (last edited May 22, 2023 11:33PM) (new)

Ibrahim Abo Hawash Great news! I deeply loved The Slow Regard of Silent Things, so I'm very excited to read this. A little frustrated regarding book three, but that's how the guy works what can you do 🤷

message 41: by Heather (new)

Heather I was JUST telling someone that they needed to read all of your books. This is great news. Thank you!!

message 42: by Mirkian (new)

Mirkian Indiancorn Actually, I can understand the third book's delay. It is best to wait until the right time comes than to force it out and destroy the whole story. Sometimes, a writer has to move on to something different, put some distance between himself and his opus magna. Even if it takes another decade, the result may be wonderful when both the book and yourself, Mr Rothfuss, are ready. That is the way I see creativity, at least.
I loved the first two volumes, I hope for quality, not speed. Thank you for sharing your work with the reading public.

message 43: by Alphaql (new)

Alphaql :( Finish the trilogy!! No more stupid books!

Is this an actual quote from an interview?

message 45: by Kent (new)

Kent Twerking wrote: "Kent wrote: "Is this an actual quote from an interview? "

It is. Won't let me post the link so you want to google "Patrick Rothfuss Is About to Be Fantasy’s Next Superstar" off vulture dot com."

Wow. Just, wow. Thats a pretty horrible way to react to your fans. The people paying you to write are wanting to pay you to write. Its your job. That is not the same as asking if you're going to get married or go to school, its asking when you're going to do that thing you're being paid for. 🫤

message 46: by Stefan (new)

Stefan My Theory is that Pat had a talented brother he kept in the basement who wrote all the novels. 10 years ago the brother died and now Pat doesn't know what to do. Trying to stay relevant by rehashing some of the scraps and notes left in the basement.
