$25 Prize awaits! 5 Minutes in Heaven Contest (and author rescue)

It's simple, really. I'll be reading my work at the Gay Rom NW meet-up happy hour on 9/14 in Seattle, and I can't decide what to read! 5 minutes, 550 to 700 words, on the theme 5 minutes in heaven . That means the readings have to be sweet stuff, happy, sexy, poignant perhaps but not angsty or scary, etc. 2 part contest, double-down by playing both parts. PART ONE (starts now!): nominate a favorite passage from any Vasquez and James book! Make your nominations here in comments. Every nomination get's your name in the hat! PART TWO (starts Tuesday 7/28) I'll post a link to all possible passages nominated or selected separately by me, and you vote. Your vote gets your name in the hat again. Summary--play either part or both, help me out (save my butt), and maybe win a bunch of book money!

Bluesimplicity I actually really like the first time Luki sees Sonny in Loving Luki Vasquez. It's a short scene, but it does give you a very good sense of their characters - Luki's always cautious observation of the world around him, and Sonny's joi (sp?) de vivre. And come on - the "What are YOU looking at?" Classic.

So that's my vote. (I'm also so sorry I can't go the meet up myself. There are going to be SO MANY awesome authors, but I'm on the wrong coast. =( )

Cynthia My favorite part in Loving Luki Vasquez is on page 197-198. I really like the description of the bowl of blood, it's mysterious. I also like how Sonny is reminded to have faith/hope in this section. This section may be a little scary but it's definitely poignant.

Lou Sylvre Thank you, Bluesimplicity! I was thinking about that same material... I think. Just to be clear we're talking about starting at the beginning of Chapter one, when they pass on the street, right? Pages 3 and 4? Or are you talking about the scene at Margie's which is in Luki's POV, which starts on page 4?

Either way, thanks very much for entering and giving me that possibility. Make sure you vote in part two of the contest! Starts some time tomorrow. And I wish you could be there, too! You're right, I'm in awe of some of the authors I get to be there with. I'm looking forward to meeting them and the authors. You know, most events are closer to you, and I always feel frustrated about that, so I know how you feel!

Lou Sylvre Cynthia, I remember writing that bit about Sonny observing the fly in the bowl of blood. It seemed rather hypnotic to me then, and I think you're right, there's a poinancy there. Nice selection! Thank you very much for offering it and entering. Don't forget to vote in part two, to double your chances in the drawing!

Koozebane That's my choice, too--I mean, if you're going with "Five Minutes in Heaven," how can you resist the moment where Sonny's head gets totally turned around?

Koozebane Yeesh, I meant for that reply to show up below Bluesimplicity's post; for me, it's that Chapter One moment on the beach...

Lou Sylvre Thanks, Koozebane! I'll put that in as your nominaiton too, and don't forget to vote once I put all the choices up, sometime tomorrow. Koozebane wrote: "Yeesh, I meant for that reply to show up below Bluesimplicity's post; for me, it's that Chapter One moment on the beach...

Yep. That's the it exactly, at the very beginning of chapter 1. (Sorry if I wasn't clearer.) It was one of those scenes that once I read it, I was like "Oh no...She's going to be another of THOSE authors that I get addicted to, isn't she?" **wink**

message 9: by Jules (new)

Jules Lovesbooks My number one favorite scene of 5 minutes in heaven is a little short, it's from Loving Luki Vasquez page 76, right after Luki and Sonny make a little love and Luki actually tucks Sonny in. I think it is such a sweet scene, but shows their personalities. I also like page 45 where Luki falls asleep at Sonny's, it is just so sweet! But it's short too! Gah!

Lou Sylvre Juliana, thank you. Those are certainly sweet moments - both. A little short, but I wouldn't rule them out. Good choices.Juliana wrote: "My number one favorite scene of 5 minutes in heaven is a little short, it's from Loving Luki Vasquez page 76, right after Luki and Sonny make a little love and Luki actually tucks Sonny in.
