Age of consent issues

I was trying to write more Captured Shadows but accidentally wrote almost ten thousand words of that hibernating Valentine prequel instead. Oops. I mean, I’m glad I’m writing something after the drought I’ve had recently, but I didn’t expect it to be this…! It’s turning out pretty good though. It’s funny, I’ve had the backstory so solid in my head for the last five years or whatever it is that I always forget what’s actually mentioned in the books and what’s just random stuff that only I know. It feels a bit strange to be going back and filling in things that are major contributing factors to his character later on. I’m not sure whether it’s all going to work ok in the end – there’s such a thing as explaining too much, I think? We shall see!

Onto a slightly weird topic I’ve been discussing with someone lately: where do you draw the line regarding the ages of characters you read about in rudey books? I know it’s partly a legal age of consent issue – here in the UK it’s 16 for everyone, but she’s in a state where it’s 18 and feels a bit icky reading about anyone younger than that, which is totally understandable. Just curious what other people think about it.

Aija The youngest for me would be 14 - 15, I guess. It's legal from 16 here as well, but some of my classmates were going at it at a younger age, so maybe that's why it wouldn't ick me out? But if the other guy is 18+ I would go for 17.
But to be honest, I can hardly see you ever icking me out. Not after SS. ;D

Richard Rider Haha well thank you for the vote of confidence :D

There's only a couple of instances where he's 15 in this and it's not weirding me out to write, it's just never really come up in conversation before so I was curious about people's thoughts. Underage porny stories ick me out when they're intended just to be hot and I won't read those, but coming at it from the angle of messed-up teenagers doing things for all the wrong reasons (he is totally not a massive self-insert, noooo) kind of makes it depressing instead. Plus it explains a lot about his character in the later books so can't really write his history without including all the ugly weird bits.

Aija Oh, in that case I think that's totally fine! Besides, if you want to show messed up, nothing should be off limits - isn't that how it is in RL? And yes, endorsing that kinda thing probably would gross me out (haven't read that kinda stuff), but what you're trying to do sounds legit ;)

Meredith Under 14 is just...nope! I know it happens, but I couldn't read it. Other than some kissing, maybe. What you are writing is probably fine.

Steelwhisper 14+ and any age of the partner. That's relatively realistic. 16+ is no problem at all.

I have worse problems with doctors, legal guardians or teachers doing their patients, wards and pupils than age-related ones in general.

I think we view the age-thing differently here, given that it ranges from 16 (UK) to 14 elsewhere in Europe. I can't see anything wrong with post-pubertal people engaging in sex. The current craze painting them children equal to pre-puberty kids is what is icky to me. It's the most clearcut case of institutional ageism in our current world.

Meredith Oh yes. Right there with steelwhisper on the guardianship/person of authority thing. TBH, I don't even like it when professors date students.
