Since the restoration of King Charles II to the throne, life has been peaceful for Callum MacGregor, laird of a once outlawed clan. For three hundred years the MacGregors had been known as the scourge of Scotland, enemies of the law and the kings who decreed them. After an all out campaign led by the Campbells and other rival chieftains hungry for MacGregor land, Callum’s mighty clan was proscribed, and the MacGregor name, abolished. Like his father, Callum had refused to surrender his name and made war with the Campbells for many years, becoming known throughout the Highlands as The Devil MacGregor. But that was long ago, before he met and married his braw, bonnie Kate. (a Campbell ‘tis true, but he loves her nonetheless) Before the terrible proscription against his clan had been lifted by King Charles II, who, with the aid of Callum’s boyhood friend, Graham Grant, and his own Campbell brother-in-law, the Earl of Argyll, was restored to his rightful place. Like many Highland clans, the MacGregors are Royalists, loyal to the Stuart line, though their fealty has less to do with religion, (Charles being Protestant and most Highlanders being Roman Catholic) and more to do with inter-clan politics. Parliament considers the Highland way of life, with a Chief ruling over his clan, barbaric. The Stuarts, having given their own kin in marriage to a Highlander, are more tolerant of Northern customs. And so, the lairds have been left alone. But the peace that Callum knows is about to be threatened.
It is 1685. King Charles II is dead and his brother James, Duke of York is about to be crowned the new King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Knowing the importance of a Highland showing of support at the new king’s coronation, Callum takes his kin on a journey to England and into her courts, aged with intrigue, danger, and the beginnings of civil unrest. He has no idea that he is leading his four bairns toward destinies that will forever change their lives—and one that will ultimately bring the law down upon the MacGregors again.
The Children of the Mist series covers the four unique paths taken by Callum MacGregor’s children. One that will cast his oldest son on a road to hellfire to rescue a lass crafted of stardust and secrets. Secrets that will sow the seeds of a new opposition called Jacobitism in the Highlands. Another of forbidden love that will spark an old feud between the MacGregors and the Fergussons, and force the laird’s second, rogue son to choose between love and honor. The path set for Callum’s only daughter is paved with danger and childhood love gone sour. A path that will put to the test everything her heart truly desires, and lead a king to battle. The final path of that fateful journey to England will lure Callum’s youngest son into a life of duplicity as a Jacobite spy who infiltrates the English courts of his enemy, and falls in love with his enemy’s wife.
