It's a complex issue, and I definitely see both sides. I think there's an argument to be made that Willoughby is playing a role with Jamie and Claire up until the final pages of the book, but in the course of 1000+ pages I think it's worth dropping a hint or two of his true nature before the big reveal.
Yeah, that's a good point, Abby. I wondered about that possibility, and also the possibility that he really was deeply conflicted within himself. And perhaps I didn't these parts carefully enough to catch them, but it did feel like some hints in one direction or the other would have felt more like complexity in the character and less like dismissing the importance of either nuance or complexity in the development of this particular character. It's also interesting, as I've continued reading in the series I've noticed other characters who are relatively flat because they are not main characters who are there as a foil or whatever, and it didn't bug me at all. Not sure why it did with this one! Maybe it's because it did seem to me a little bit like his ethnicity was used as part of his flatness and not part of his nuance. I'd love to hear other thoughts as I think about it more.
