If that was the case, it had nothing to do with Tony! Then why was Veronica mad at him throughout ?
At the time the book took place- possibly the mid 1960’s- it was still fairly socially unacceptable for an unmarried woman to get pregnant. Many men felt trapped into marrying the woman and resented the fact. So Adrian may have committed suicide as a way out. Seems crazy today of course. But at the time it was normal and expected for the man to marry a woman he got pregnant.
