I didn't expect to like it, but I think it turned out beautifully because they were such opposites. Cress drew out the young, innocent, protective side of Thorne that hadn't been there before. I don't think he could have truly fallen in love with anyone but Cress, because she was so different and pure. Also, she was very naive and childlike, but she also doesn't know her own strength that kept positive all those years in the satellite, and got her through the desert.
I always viewed Thorne and Cinder like BFFs. They are found family, but never had those feelings for each other. Besides, they are the kind of friends for each other that will accept and care for each other but not challenge each other to grow and they each needed their pairing to bring that growth out in them.
