agreed, but as American Psycho, it is quite clinical and emotion-less... reads more like a to-do list - in fact the later chapters are just outlined in list-form...
not sure it classifies as, gory, but the hardest thing to read I came across was Her in our Auschwitz and Other Stories by Tadeusz Borowski, who himself was in Auschwitz and survived, just to write this book with his experiences about it, and then later committed suicide...
but of course this is more documentary than novel, if you see what I mean...
