I think Fingersmith is her best. I just loved the story and its such a clever plot.
I agree that Fingersmith is her best. I do find her work a bit hit and miss to be honest.I love a good ghost story but was very disappointed with this offering.
You might need a little cultural context to make their choices a bit clearer. To landed folks like the Ayers family, the property is more important than almost anything. It is your legacy. Properties stay in landed families for centuries, and it is your responsibility, as the one charged with its upkeep, to keep it for the next generation. You can be penniless, insane, eaten away by rats, but if you lose the property, you have essentially ruined the family. I would have been shocked if they HAD left, actually. They would have abdicated an ancient responsibility that runs totally against their conditioning as landed gentry.
And I also loved Fingersmith and Affinity.

I was really disappointed by this one, but her three books set in the 19th century are amazing! I wish she would go back to writing about that period.
