It's as though you're reading my mind (though I have better grammar). To quote Stephen King, "a writer is God to the people in a story". We cannot decide how the book ends, only the author can do that. We are not the god, or in this case goddess, of the work and thus can't decide what happens. A fan fiction is different because that's almost like the characters living in an alternate universe. It's the same people but a different "god" and a different situation.
