I would also say that one of Stenwolds strength is that he has seen the world. If he had not seen the threat of the Empire then never would the lowlands have been ready.

To be fair, they were hardly ready anyway, since they spent the majority of their time ignoring his warning and batting him off as a fool - may it be young or old.
I do think he gained some valuable experience by seeing the world though. Maybe his warnings fell of deaf ears, but he had some experience of how the Wasps fight and stuff.

Back on the actual subject of Stenwold, he is of some use in the later books since he has experience of war. His actual artifice is definitely lacking though, detracting from his usual beetle usefulness...maybe he's becoming an Ant inside. Lol.
