I didn't mean "hero" in the usual sense, but more in a literary sense. I certainly think he becomes a hero in both meanings by the end of Rapture.
I believe that because he isn't the typical "Knight in Shining Armor", I like the book more than other romance novels. The characters are multi faceted, just like real people. No one is always perfect. No one is always bad. I too was PO'ed at Gabriel on more than one occasion. However, I think that his assent into changing for the better is what makes us love him. His time in Italy alone was the rapture.
