She was preventing Bridget from going to London where she would get the flu and bring it back to Fox Corner. She got in a lot of trouble for pushing her down the stairs, so she lied instead, so Bridget didn't go.
This discussion made me feel a little better about my confusion too Daniell :) I would have liked to read more about her mother (there was a lot going on there) and her siblings etc. Less about the war but that is only my own preference and would have drasically changed the whole story. I loved the idea of the story line, and it certinaly made me think. Well done! I just don't like reading about wars very much, that made a large piece of the book drag for me.
