M I had that same sense too, Nancy, that she was absorbing lessons from each life, without actually being aware that she was living multiple lives. I will need to re-read this book again more closely; I hadn't realized that shooting Hitler didn't "fade to black."

Nancy My memory is questionable! I believe the final life does not fade to black. I interpreted the opening scene (the shooting) as the conclusion of that last life, and in the first scene, Ursula does die for the first (perhaps final?) time. I really like your expression - that she was "absorbing lessons" without full consciousness of the knowledge, only compelling feelings about what she must do.
