I did some heavy thinking about the title a couple of years ago when my students read the book for summer reading. I'm not sure I'm one hundred percent on target with my theory, but I agree with you that the title has to be a lot more significant than many of our fellow posters understand it. I won't repeat all my thoughts on the subject (my post is somewhere up there), but I agree with you that the title has to do with the way memory works (especially the memory of older people) and the way memory transforms both story telling and what we are able to accept or come to terms with in our lives.
