See previous comment - I've just discovered I'm allowed to comment on reviews! Thank goodness, I've been wanting to respond to you since you reviewed my first novel! Your reviews are so insightful and genuinely helpful. I feel I recognize the shortcomings you noted and I can use them to try and overcome similar issues in the next one. (Annoyingly what often happens is you learn from one mistake but make a new one!). I really appreciate how deeply you seem to read the books and the depth of your response to them. It's so helpful. I had truly looked forward to your review to this one after such a detailed and helpful review of the last. I'm sorry I didn't make your five stars this time but I'm seeing it as my personal mission for next!

ohmygod Hi! I'm sorry, i did not see this until right now! Thank you for taking my very very direct review with such grace. I honestly waffled, because I know how 1. tough it is to read a critical review 2. how helpful it can be (for myself, when I get them. So like, I hate them. But they help me so much more than ultra positive reviews). But I enjoy your style very much and the themes you focus on in your books, so, as long as you keep writing--if you'll keep having my crotchety reviews--I will always look forward to reading you. <3
I will keep looking forward to your 'crotchety reviews'! I agree with all of that and you are right, the harsher reviews are hard to read, you obsess over them, you have to go through a process including a brief period where you decide you're obviously rubbish and should give up now, and then you just sort of finish building your bridge, get over it, and then you can start improving your work. Your feedback is never just shallow, I can always see clearly from the start the truth of what you observe. And you write in a bubble so often it's great to have someone engage! So bring on the reviews and I'll keep trying to impress you!
