Giles Watson They are Ukrainian Jewish refugees from the Russian revolution, destined, we can guess, to die in the Holocaust. Yes, the father is a capitalist - but the comparison with modern Russian oligarchs seems to miss most of the significance of the story. It's clearly autobiographical / that's why it was written, I'd say - and as a portrait of the impact of neglect and abuse on the inner life of a child whose life is on a track from privilege to total dispossession, it's unparalleled.
