I'm very careful to try to remain consistent in my details. I started out by creating a detailed outline of chapters and characters. I know when I'm reading a favorite author and something inconsistent stops me dead, I HAVE to go back and either prove or disprove my questions. Sometimes, even the best authors forget an important detail or continuity stream.
