That's a very perceptive critique although I have to confess I can't recall ever having read Robert Goddard. The novel was scaled down from a similar story that actually began in the USA. It desperately needed a rewrite and that was one of the reasons I spent time in a cottage in the midst of a deer farm in Mole Creek, like the one owned by Xander and Pete, but nicer (and worth a stay). The location was a gift that allowed me to strip away all the contemporary American nonsense and turn it into an authentically Australian story. As for the (alleged) humour, I can't help it and I'm constantly battling my inner clown to maintain some serious jeopardy. A sequel has been commissioned, but first there's a non-sequel psychological thriller that I should be writing right now.
