Changing book covers > Likes and Comments

Hello. I've updated covers for a few books and was wondering if there were a way to go about updating the covers on GoodReads. I've read you can only create alternate cover editions. Is this true? What are alternate cover editions, and why are authors unable to simply change the book cover to match the cover that's on Amazon?
