I also liked the book but puzzled over the cover. Whose feet are those? They can't be Malka's, they're too unblemished.
Thanks. I just bought it on iBooks. Not that Apple is really that much better than Amazon, but it's the principle of the thing. Debated also going to B&N and Kobo, but having books spread out across too many platforms is even more crazy than I can cope with.
While I haven't read Susan Gilman's The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street, the reviews have been excellent on goodreads.com, but as Lauren writes, the cover is misleading. It looks like a YA.
As an author with a book about to debut, my cover has just been pulled, and redesigned. Fortunately, it was too similar to others on the market. While it was colorful and dazzling, it didn't reflect the book's tone. The new cover will project a more accurate impression.
Hopefully, Gilman's book will continue to receive great word-of-mouth. I look forward to reading it.
In today's New York Times, a book designer struggles with his own cover:

I thought the fact that the legs were strong and symmetrical alone proved that whoever was responsible for the cover didn't read it closely.
That cover does not reflect the depth of this story. I love that she's complicated, fierce, ambitious, cunning, resilient...she's a winner! The cover is misleading
Funny to see your comment. I was attracted to the cover (perhaps a new edition) of New York's lower east side, turn of the century, pushcarts and people. Just began to read this...enjoying so far.
Sounds like a good read and Lauren yet another great example of why we shouldn't judge books by their covers!
I have a very different cover. I also picked up my copy at the Tenement Museum in NYC, so regardless of cover, I knew I'd be in for a good story, not vapid chick lit.
