This sentence really struck me... and I think indirectly answers the question you posed. How can we be "a fair, just, humane, free, compassionate, unwarlike state" when we have all these great scars? We don't need a good plastic surgeon to cover or remove the scars... we need someone to help us acknowledge what caused them! Then maybe we could move on. Perhaps Paul Levy and Eric Larsen are part of that solution!
