K.H. Brower This horror short story collection hits all the best notes of Dorr’s signature style. Sardonic wit. Surprise twists. Challenging appetites. His distinct voice serves up sexual yearnings complicated by emotional relationships.

The dozen stories span a range of distinct worlds, including a medieval Dance for the Dead in “The Last Dance” and a Playboy photo shoot with zombie models in “Girls Gone Dead.” We know to expect Dorr’s deliciously bodacious Vampires and this volume does not disappoint.

In the title story “Avoid Seeing a Mouse” the monster isn’t the mouse, but rather an ancient Egyptian curse unleashed at the Memphis Tennessee Steel Pyramid during a museum tour of Egyptian artifacts. The exhibit seems to inspire the main character Henry’s haunting dreams. Dorr wraps his layered story in Henry’s failing relationship, and Henry’s efforts to rekindle what he’s lost.
