I'm fascinated by the 50's. The fashion was incredible. Societal norms and gender roles were such a world away from what they are now, yet it really wasn't that long ago. Any book that transports me to that time is an enjoyable ride.
I am obsessed with the Victorian era, most particularly the 1850s. Its hard to find books that are set then, though, so I usually settle for Regency, and it hardly feels like I'm slumming it. There's just that delightful, unshakeable charm and elegance to it all, but with more than enough societal issues to build a deep sense of satisfaction when the plot inevitably defies convention. That's what's at the heart of historical fiction, I think: a longing to immerse oneself an era long past, and an equally deep desire to defeat it.
I'm a huge fan of the Classical period, but I can get into pretty much any period if the author balances the story and historical detail properly. I think what fascinates me most about my current obsession--Ancient Rome--is the sheer scale of everything: the ambition, the pettiness, the sublime, and the brutal.
I enjoy medieval mystery/thriller about the forgotten people of history's mysteries. Also, mystery/thrillers during the time of Christ. If you enjoy these types of genres, go to my website below.Jackmholt.com
I'm particularly fond of ancient history! Ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome left behind a rich cultural legacy that continues to influence art, literature, philosophy, religion, and politics today. Studying ancient history provides insights into the origins of our own cultural traditions and beliefs.
The Roman period and medieval times, which you can enjoy in my trilogy series The Cup of Christ mystery/thriller.Jack Holt
