message 1: by Angela (new)

Angela It was like reading a bulletin from the cdc

message 2: by Karen (new)

Karen THANK YOU!!! I was thinking the same thing. I was a fan of hers, but haven't been able to read the last two or three. So much Covid. It's in every other paragraph. I think she did it to be a Covid martyr, like she went to war from her Zoom room. Thank you for making me feel normal. : )

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky Saxton There is a section at the end of the book (at least in my version) discussing her reasoning for placing the narrative now and why she chose to include the pandemic. It may not change your mind, but I did think the same at first but her explanation makes sense. No

message 4: by Heather (new)

Heather I agree. I read to escape reality and I did not enjoy reading about COvid and masking. The author’s note at the end did little to redeem it.

message 5: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Glad to see others feel the same. When I’m finished I will definitely discuss this in my own review; it’s completely peppered when Covid mentions and as a result I’m struggling to get through it. I don’t want to feel preached to when I’m reading, and I prefer to not be able to tell what the author’s political views are when I’m reading.

message 6: by Nell (new)

Nell Berens Prosise Covid isn’t (well, shouldn’t be) political. And, like it or not, its very much a part of all of our lives the last 3 years. Pretending it didn’t happen is kind of silly. But I guess if that’s what you want, cool.

Xistentialite We've all heard about it for 3 years now, I think it's enough. We won't forget it so bringing it up in the book where it isn't directly related to the overall story is pointless. I couldn't get through the first chapter and I normally like her books. But the dark stories involving child abuse is too fucked up for me

message 8: by Erin Glover (new)

Erin Glover Stopped after 30 minutes because of the Covid talk.

message 9: by Jen (new)

Jen Once they said mask I was done

message 10: by Jordyn (new)

Jordyn It’s interesting people are so offended by the mask and Covid references. It didn’t bother me at all and I didn’t notice it distracting me from the book. But then again I’m a nurse and up until recently still having to wear a mask for work so maybe some of us are more acclimated than others. If you finished the book you’d see Covid and it’s long lasting symptoms had a very significant and detrimental effect on Callie so that could be part of the reason she included so much about it.

message 11: by Jill (new)

Jill Yes. To all of this. I DNF’d die to this. I wish I would have seen your review before starting.

message 12: by Kioyte (new)

Kioyte Agreed.

message 13: by Austin (new)

Austin Dempsey I agree. It’s fiction for a reason. And I don’t mind the reference entirely. But it’s constant and really derails the flow of the book for me.

message 14: by Pollies (new)

Pollies It was beyond excessive... and it was all lies. That "vaccine" didnt help anyone but the government and the pharmaceutical company that manufactured it. I hated how she pushed her INCORRECT views on her readers RELENTLESSLY. My review went from 5 stars to 1 star for this reason. Karin Slaughter needs to give her head a shake and stay in her own lane.

message 15: by Innessa (new)

Innessa Dan I agree 10000 percent ! I constant Covid and mask and it just was not for me only because of that . She pushed her view on the reader so randomly it’s like I wanted to finish the book so bad and it she kept talking about masks and Covid and it def downgraded the book and I would not recommend it

message 16: by Tara (new)

Tara It wasn’t the fact that covid was brought up, it was how it was spun, relentless!

message 17: by Evelien (new)

Evelien Lmaoooo the COVID references were such a small part of this book. Sad that you’re not able to read through it

Anna~One Page at a Time~ yes! I am almost finished reading it and the constant mentioning of Covid, masks, vaccines, etc makes me roll my eyes. She throws it in there chapter after chapter and they aren't even important to what is going on at the moment. Which is unfortunate because the actual story is amazing.

message 19: by Melyssa (new)

Melyssa Agree. If I almost stopped reading 20 pages in. Ridiculous.

message 20: by Dena (new)

Dena Clements Contemplating DNF-ing this book. I’m just not into it anyways but the constant mask on mask off is bugging me. I didn’t see its relevance and I think in the beginning it was fine because it did set the scene. But I’m 6 hrs in this audiobook and it’s feeling like a no for me. I got too many books on my TBR to waste another 6+hrs.

message 21: by Tori (new)

Tori Prower Imagine being upset about placing a story based in a time of real struggle and crying over it. Fiction is based in time periods. Y'all might have mistaken fiction for sci-fi. The 80s happened, we have fiction based in the 80s. Teen fiction is constantly based in high school coming of age, do people who hated high school complain about how annoying high school was for 4 years and get over it I don't want to read it already! No. Move on. Clearly you allllll missed the point of the book. The opioid crisis killed MILLIONS during COVID and your outrage is at a pandemic instead of the lack of assistance? Domestic violence SKYROCKETED during COVID, trapping victims with their abusers causing an absurd death toll and your mad at masks and not women being tortured, raped and killed with no escape. Get your pea brains out your brown stars.

message 22: by Liz (new)

Liz Yes same! I think Covid is still to fresh and raw and traumatic to read a fiction book based during that time period. We’re not talking 40 years ago, we’re talking 3.
Still gonna try and finish!

message 23: by Genna (new)

Genna I'm glad I found this review. I haven't finished the book yet but the references to COVID are so annoying and takes me out of the story way more than it should. I was hoping maybe she'd make some connection with the story and COVID like a mask was found at the scene of the crime or something like that but it doesn't seem like it's progressing the story and could probably have cut the book back by about 100 pages.

message 24: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Cyr Yep the Covid stuff really bothered me too- came to the comments to see if I was the only one. It was non stop and shamed people in the book which is wild

message 25: by Brandy (new)

Brandy Qualls I actually loved the Covid talk, especially the part she put after the book. I’m a healthcare worker who worked ICU through the pandemic. And after reading that part I cried so hard. I felt like I was tapping into some of the trauma I endured during Covid.

message 26: by Yazmine (new)

Yazmine I get what you mean, the odd reference would have done what it needed to for the plot but it felt a bit forced and not always relevant, I felt the same with the repeated Kurt Cobain jokes, after the first two it was a bit old

message 27: by Cher (new)

Cher Green-LaRock I came to see if the Covid stuff continued throughout the book. I guess I got my answer. Thank you all for sharing.

message 28: by Mare (new)

Mare Don’t forget the Kurt cobain references over and over as wel lol

message 29: by JP (new)

JP How immature can a reader be to 1 star a book for mentioning Covid

message 30: by Erica (new)

Erica D Agreed!!! So annoying

message 31: by Danna (new)

Danna Mentioning Covid is one thing. But to constantly bring it up. Along with some political rants. Please just let us read a book and escape for a while.

message 32: by Jessica Lee (new)

Jessica Lee I'm only about 10% into this book and I'm about to DNF it because of how much COVID talk there is already.

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Agree 100% this is a terrible book, the constant covid mentions, the language, the cringe worthy names, I will never read this author again

message 34: by Crystal (new)

Crystal I’m only on page 56, but ready to quit because of all of the Covid references especially now reading that it continues throughout the book.

message 35: by Janelle (new)

Janelle Schmittberger 124 pages in and quit.

message 36: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Roberson Yes! No thank you to the Covid reminders ugh!

message 37: by Alysha (new)

Alysha Yes! I came to see if anyone would mention this..ready to quit because I’m sick of rolling my eyes at all the ridiculous references to Covid, masks, distancing and hand sanitizer🙄

message 38: by Aryn (new)

Aryn I was able to tone out the COVID references during the book (I listened to the audio) but left the author's note playing at the end and was just sick of it by then. Not everyone lost their ever loving mind over COVID and to be preached to by people who did is just, well, too reminiscent of a period of our history I don't want to return to

message 39: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Wyatt I love the premise of this book but the constant COVID talk and the very clear political bias has me questioning my love for Karin Slaughter

message 40: by Kim (new)

Kim Agree!

message 41: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Patton escaping into a reality of pedophila, rape, etc but covid is where yall draw the line?? weird af imo

message 42: by r. (new)

r. Nicole… lmao. My thoughts exactly. This book was NOT centred around Covid, but rather, it was set during a time period in which Covid happened. The story had little to do with the pandemic except to set the time frame. Weird that that’s what got to people but not the pedophilia, rape, and torture.

message 43: by Kristine (new)

Kristine Krush I’m over the COVID references. On chapter 17 and just skimming to see how it ends already. I lost interest a few chapters ago.

message 44: by Rhiannon (new)

Rhiannon Thank you! There was no need for all of it. It’s a bunch of lies and falsehoods, and none of it was necessary to the story.

message 45: by Jaclyn (new)

Jaclyn Silverstein So out of all the topics in this book, you draw the line at Covid? Weird take

message 46: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Crisp I DNF bc of this reason.

message 47: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Ballew I’m listening to it now and all the Covid talk is annoying. I don’t care what color masks people are wearing. lol. The story is good though.

message 48: by Ash (new)

Ash Ligon The book begins with the rape, abuse and attempted murder of a young girl, but yeah get triggered by the minor mentions of masks and covid. Smfh.
