Pisces51 It was a slow burn for me, and though I felt that the writing was excellent and had the ring of realism, the content just was not resonating with me. It was obviously an occult yarn but I was persevering to read the pages. Then, it was farther along in the book when Lex looked up his old girlfriend for advice. No spoilers. It is about that point when the narrative goes from mildly interesting to Oh. my god!!! I was turning pages as fast as I ever have. The horror only loomed larger and more threatening like a severe thunderstorm and then they call a tornado warning. I rated the book 4 Stars which it certainly deserves. My book review will be posted Sunday. Really was a fooler and shockingly good scare the hell out of you horror.

Happy to chatter about it but don’t want to spoiler anything or clog up the feed! I have free signed bookplates and a cheesy trailer and would love to do a couple giveaways, if folks are keen

Kenneth McKinley Started this last night when I had a little time. The next thing I knew, I was a third of the way through it and could’ve stayed up all night. This is really good writing, Dan. The word choices are impeccable and breathe so much life into this tale. I feel like I’m on the lake in the middle of the night in a leaky boat.

The boat scene was great - one of many excellent scenes. There's some real vivid intensity to this book.

Dan Franklin Thank you so much!!

It goes a bit sideways around the halfway point haha. But hopefully in a fun* way!

I liked writing the boat scene, even if the inspiration for the lake is packed with Canadian geese which are absolutely more daunting than any haunting

*a very loose definition of fun

I'll say- my favorite scene is in the middle where we see our protagonist's attempt to get help play out. "Fun" IS a word that could be used to describe it, though I can think of other better words that would risk spoiling the story!

Dan Franklin Reaching the end of May and just wanted to say thank y’all who read and responded and took the time to visit! Whenever it all closes up, Id be happy to mail a copy of my other book (The Eater of Gods) and a copy of a nifty book I didn’t write but is here at the office (Gothic, by Fracassi) to a random chosen commenter!

If youve read one or both of those, I can find substitutions, too

Also if you want a signed book plate for Linger, would be happy to mail it out your way for free!

message 21: by Netanella (new)

Netanella Hey Dan, that's a really sweet of you to offer! I wanted to say thank you for coming out to Horror Aficionados and doing this for all of us!

I realized that I haven't posted any comments even though I read the book this month with the group.

I wanted to let you know that my favorite part of the book when when you described the lake at night as shiny like a black plastic garbage bag. That image has stuck with me for several weeks now!

Thanks for joining us Dan.
And may I add, I enjoyed The Eater of Gods when I read it. We need more good mummy horror.

And, the book would be a great pick for the mummy prompt in the Song Challenge: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
